Young Farmers Calf Wintering Competition 2016

 5th April 2016
Strong YF entry at Angus Tayside calf competition

THERE was a strong entry of 44 Young Farmers' cattle forward at the Angus Tayside overwintering competition held at Lawrie and Symington's Forfar mart, recently, where the championship ticket went to a bullock from Forfar JAC's Andrew Adam.
His winner was a pure Limousin bullock bred at the Adam family's hill farm, Auldallan, and bought at the November sale in Forfar for £1140 at a weight of 465kg. During the winter, this Millington Ferrari-sired 14-month-old put on 185kg and was knocked down on the day to Blair Duffton, Bogie Street, Huntly, for £1380.
Matthew Steel, a fellow Forfar JAC member, picked up his fifth reserve championship with a 16-month-old Limmy cross heifer bought for £1160 from her breeder, Stewart Brown, Roepark, Brechin. On the day, she tipped the scales at 560kg and sold for £1610 which was the dearest of the YF calves and also secured Matthew a Jockey Jan memorial trophy for the best return on capital of £450. Her buyer was the judge, Scott Innes, who will use her for breeding in his commercial herd at Findhorn.
Another Jockey Jan trophy, this time for best daily liveweight gain, went to Ruaridh Lawrie whose Limousin bullock put on 1.43kg per day, while the Limmy bullock from Dean Farquharson was the best halter trained and Glenn Jackson and his Limmy cross bullock were best turned out.
In the YF section, the 30 bullocks averaged 212p per kg or £1100 with the 14 heifers at 229p or £1180.
