James Beattie

Hometown Bechin Age 18 Carrying the Flame through Meigle Carrying the Flame on 12 June 2012 James's nomination story

James has had a very chequered upbringing with many house relocations and for a lot of this time we lost contact completely. On his 16th birthday he asked to live with us, his grandparents, in Brechin and we were pleased to have him. He is still being educated at Forfar Academy and last year they were presented with a trophy for The Forfar Loch Sponsored Run in memory of jockey Jan Katie Wilson who died in very tragic circumstances which James won as fastest boy. He is also a member of the Forfar Runners and attends Forfar and Brechin badmington clubs. He has been made a prefect going into 6th. year and has been selected by the Forfar Rotary Club to attend the youth leadership awards at Nethybridge this year. We are very proud grandparents to an outstanding young man who has conquered adversity to become a good example of, and to, the youth of today.

I remember Jan taking part every year in the school’s sponsored run round Forfar Loch and winning, so there was no trophy for this and after speaking to Mr Lynch and Mrs Callander the Jockey Jan Memorial Fund is to supply two trophy’s this year for the first boy and girl to finish, since this was mentioned at the last day of school quite a few of the kids that new Jan have said to me that their all in training for it to get their name on the trophy first, its good to see they have the same attitude that Jan had.
